How far directors plan and script production treatment, depends partly on the nature and complexity of the productions, and partly on their skills and temperament. Some shows need little preparation, others require detailed planning and coordination.
Where shot details cannot be predicted, improvisation may be unavoidable. But even complex situations can usually be broken down into a framework in which each camera has a prearranged selection of potential shots.
Some productions have a regular format, so that the director only needs to outline each camera’s treatment;
‘Camera 1 gives me a long shot for the opening of the show; mid-shot entrances and contestants, and close-ups of the panel as they contribute…’
