The Camera Tripod

The tripod’s three-legged stand is able to provide a very rigid support for your camera, even when shooting under difficult conditions. It is compact and portable, and its height is adjustable (e.g. 2 to 6 ft (55 cm to 2 m)).

Design details

The tripod’s telescopic legs which are independently extendable, are usually constructed from metal-alloy or carbon fiber. There are many variations on tripod design, from simple low cost systems to very adaptable sophisticated arrangements. The best have bracing supports between a central column and each leg for added rigidity. To prevent the tripod’s feet from slipping, they normally have either rubber-pads for smooth ground, or spikes (screw-out or retractable) for rough surfaces.
