These are the familiar all-purpose ‘portable’ or ‘lightweight’ camera units which are used for news-gathering (ENG), shooting on location (electronic field production; EFP), and for small studio work. Performance ranges from high-grade single-CCD types, to 3-CCD forms which produce pictures of top broadcast quality.
The main advantage of this type of unit, is its flexibility. You can carry it around on a shoulder, mount it on a tripod, a pedestal, or a jib arm, equally effectively.
Demountable or modular forms of portable camera can be fitted with different lenses, viewfinders, controls (focus, zoom) to suit the type of production you are shooting.
