20Verbal communication in organizational settings

Abstract: This chapter presents a growing body of research focused on the role communication plays in the functioning and constitution of organizations. After presenting the interpretive perspective on organizational communication, I propose to focus on the work of conversation analysts and ethnomethodologists who, especially since the 1990s, have been interested in studying the detail of what they call ‘institutional talk’, i.e. the interactional order that typically emerges in institutional and organizational contexts.
