My first year at Lydia Hawk Elementary School was the last year first-grade teacher Mrs. Jerkins would teach before retiring. In hindsight, I can see she was a mean-spirited grouch who was way past due for retirement. She also bore a striking resemblance to “The Church Lady” from the famous Saturday Night Live skit.
