Chapter 17. Hands-on: Converting a Site to Joomla

This chapter will walk you through the process of converting an existing site to Joomla. We are going to assume you have a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, and you’ve already read Chapter 11, which explains the basics of how templates work.

If you don’t already have an existing site to convert, you might consider using one of the default Joomla templates as a starting point or even creating your own from scratch.

Designing Your Website

We build websites by starting with an overall page design in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Fireworks—the most common tools for designing a website. Once a “look and feel” is established and we’re happy with everything else, that file gets converted to HTML. Depending on your layout and design, the conversion process varies greatly in order to optimize your site for the Internet. This book isn’t about that conversion process. If you’re not comfortable with slicing up a Photoshop file, there are a number of online services that will do it for a nominal fee.
