Database Setup

The database is where all of the information for your website is stored. In this appendix, we’re going to create a database and database user, and then give that database user privileges to interact with the database.

Since cPanel is the most popular hosting control panel, we will use it in our examples. If you are not using cPanel, these instructions should loosely correspond to the process in your host’s control panel. You may need to consult your hosting provider for specific information.

Let’s get started by logging in:

1. Navigate to http://www.<yourdomain>.com/cpanel.

2. When prompted, enter in your login credentials. If you don’t know them, refer to any documentation that you may have received from your host when you signed up.

3. Find and click the icon titled MySQL Databases. The icon should look like Figure A-1, but, depending on your version of cPanel, it may be different.

1. In the New Database: field, enter joomla or whatever you would like for a database name as shown in Figure A-2.

1. Click Create Database.

2. On the success screen, click [ Go Back ] to return to the MySQL Databases screen.
