Logs, Statistics, and Other Features

You can view the Application Console for your application at http://appengine.google.com, logging in with your Google Account, and selecting your application.

Within the Application Console, you may view various types of logging, usage, and administrative data. The Dashboard page presents an overview, including charts showing request traffic, bandwidth and CPU usage, and errors over time. You can also track which parts of your application are responsible for the most load. Figure 10-3 shows a snapshot of our personal code review app’s Dashboard after just a few requests.

As your application is used over time, the Dashboard can help you tune performance and locate possible bugs. You can also use the Logs and Admin Logs to keep find more information on application and management events, respectively.

In addition to the information about your code and application events, the Data Viewer page provides diagnostics and direct access to your Datastore entities and indexes. From the Data Viewer, you can browse entities and issue Datastore queries to examine your production data, as shown in Figure 10-4.

If you have done the wise thing and added logging messages to your application, they will come in handy when you’re trying to understand what is going on in your application when it is running on appspot.com. The Logs page looks somewhat different than the log that you watch when running applications on your desktop.
