This chapter focuses on two essential concepts behind the creation and manipulation of images in general: file formats and image resolution.

Every file you use when you do work on a computer has a format. For instance, Word documents have a .doc or .docx format. Excel spreadsheet documents usually have an .xls file format. How a file is formatted determines the general characteristics and capacities of the file, as well as what applications can be used to open, read, and modify the file.
