Step 3, Formalization , is, unfortunately, the point at which database design starts for many designers (see Table 12-1). The first thing they do is dig out the vendor’s DBMS manual and start coding. For the more enlightened, this is the third physical database design step—where the Rationalized physical data model meets the DBMS that will be used in its implementation.
