Preface

Both of us have worked in human-computer interaction for more than three decades — since the early days of the field, when it had only just stopped being called “Man-Machine Integration.” Before beginning this collaboration, we had each attended numerous ACM/SIGCHI conferences over the years, had known of each other’s work, and had even corresponded — via snail mail! — about the 1985 conference. It was only a few short years ago, however, that our paths crossed physically — we finally met in person at the CHI 2008 conference in Florence, Italy. We had a wonderful lunch together at a “Slow Food” hole-in-the-wall trattoria full of locals, and a camaraderie was born.
