7. Disable Encryption (FileVault and Third-Party)

If you use Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion, you have the ability to use an encryption feature to prevent other people from seeing or copying your files. Under Snow Leopard, this feature was called FileVault, and it encrypted the files in your home folder. The feature was improved in Lion to extend the encryption to your entire disk (Full Disk Encryption, or FDE). Apple uses the name FileVault 2 to differentiate the new features (although strangely, you still see only FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, where you enable the feature).
