4. Run Apple Software Updates

Apple supports upgrading to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion. While it’s possible for some Macs that meet the hardware requirements to upgrade from earlier versions of OS X with additional procedures (such as an erase of your hard disk and a clean install), I’m only covering the official upgrade path in this guide. So that means that if you’re running Snow Leopard, you should be using the final version, 10.6.8.
