2. Consider Hardware Upgrades

Besides the memory upgrade I alluded to in the last section, there are two other pieces of hardware that you should think about purchasing before upgrading to Mavericks. One of them I consider to be essential (and you may already have one), and the other is a nice-to-have that will help you get more out of the new operating system.

The essential hardware is an external backup drive. I’ll address backing up just before the upgrade later in this book, but if you don’t already have an external backup drive, quite frankly, you’re playing with fire.
