Failover

Failover is a process in which a system transfers functions from a failed component—either hardware or software—to an identical working component. All failover configurations by definition rely on redundant components; at least one of the redundant components must be active, while the others are on standby for use should the active component fail.

The best example of a system that utilizes failover components is a RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disks). RAIDs typically contain pools of spare disks to be used in place of a failed disk that was previously in use.
