Managing Data Loss

One of the most critical assets of any company is its data, whether it consists of financials, customer demographics, or email. Losing a few files here and there is commonplace, and system administrators can mitigate most damage with prudent backups. But restoring entire file systems and databases can take quite some time, during which users can't access that data. Data loss can occur for a variety of reasons, some of which are listed here:

  • Hardware failure

  • Human error (such as gross misuse of rm–rf)

  • Malicious behavior (such as a hacker or virus)

  • Operating system crash

  • Inconsistent backups
