What Is an IT Disaster?

People define disasters in many different ways, but in the information technology world, a disaster is any event or condition that disrupts operations for an extended period of time. The definition of “extended period of time” really depends on your business. An outage of a bank's master account database might be considered a disaster if it lasts for more than several hours. A small business might be able to operate for up to a week without an email server before the situation reaches the disaster stage.

Every area and every business is subject to its own unique natural and man-made disasters. Several types of disasters, however, are common to a wide number of businesses. These include the following:
