Patching Operating Systems
Patches can go by many names like updates, service packs, and mods, but they're just more eloquent names for patches. Patches for operating systems (OS) and other software exist for various reasons: Manufacturers fix bugs, implement new features, and perhaps improve performance. Regardless of the reason, for the Unix system administrator, patching means making changes to critical software, so the administrator needs to apply those patches with care.
