Logging
System logs are a system administrator's best friend. They tell the story of each system, service, and network in your infrastructure. There are many types of logs, and each operating system and application has a different way of logging information. The most common manifestation of logs in Unix is the log file. This is a simple text file to which application or system log messages are appended. Most well-constructed logs contain the date and time each message was generated, the application that generated it, and a detailed description of the event that occurred.
Many logging techniques and log files are common to all Unix systems. The following sections discuss the use of these techniques and log files in monitoring your systems.
