As a general principle, the role of the MAC module is to allow multiple users to share a common resource. The definition of a resource, and of the procedures by which access to the medium is granted, depends on the adopted transmission and multiple access techniques. As mentioned in Chapter 9 “Multi-User Wireless Communications,” the flows of information bits are reorganized in the MAC into larger information packets called MAC-PDUs, which, after appropriate coding, are sent over the air interface.
