Transmission media are used to carry computer network data. All transport systems operate over some kind of medium. The desired result of any transmission medium is to transport something with minimal loss. For example, interstate highways use concrete and blacktop for the roads that cars travel on. Water systems use iron, copper, and plastic piping to transport water. Computer networks use copper or fiber optic cable and wireless connection media to provide a conduit to transmit data signals.

Computer network transmission media have two elements: the transmission medium and the transmission signal.
