Why write this book?

The number of people and organisations connected to the Internet continues to grow at a phenomenal rate – partly fuelled by the availability of free Internet access. This explosive growth in usage is accompanied by a rapid expansion and evolution of the TCP/IP-based technologies on which the Internet is built.

This increasing complexity can make it difficult for the non-expert user to glean the basic principles on which the Internet operates. This book is my attempt to bridge that gap. It is aimed at the “typical” computer user wishing to make sense of the Internet – who wants to “peep behind the curtain” to get a feel for what's going on.
