Introduction

This is a book about the transcendent issues that must be addressed if an organization is to create a value chain capable of responding to market needs. It is transcendent in the sense that it does not get into the technical details of managing the various components of a value chain. For example, if you are looking for guidance on how to manage inventories, or how to manage inbound and outbound logistics, or how to address queuing issues in operations, or how to deal with customer service issues, you will not find it here. There are many books and articles that exist for that purpose. Instead, we focus on the issues that we believe transcend the technical; issues if not addressed will render the technical ineffective.
