Studios may now be part of wealthy entertainment conglomerates, but they must still earn their keep. That means doing what studios have done for more than a century—developing, financing, producing, marketing and distributing successful movies and shows. Internet companies that produce entertainment, like Netflix and Hulu, must do precisely the same things.

Since this is a business book, we’ll focus on the business side of production as opposed to production itself, which is when the business people primarily step aside and the filmmakers take over.
