Summary

This chapter addressed some of the more common business models that may drive PKI deployment. In particular, this chapter discussed the following business models:

  • Business models related to internal communications requirements

  • Business models related to external communications requirements

It was also noted that hybrids of these two models are possible (that is, an organization may implement both business models).

The goal of a PKI is to establish a single infrastructure that is capable of supporting multiple applications across multiple domains. This infrastructure must be cost-effective, capable of evolving over time, and based on industry-accepted standards to help ensure interoperability with other domains.
