The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) [HS97] was originally conceived as a simple-to-describe, simple-to-implement subset of the capability of the X.500 Directory Access Protocol (DAP) . Over time, this "subset" of useful functions and features has expanded to incorporate the needs of the many different environments that have chosen to use LDAP as the access protocol for their repository (X.500-compliant directory or otherwise). This has led some to question whether the "L" in LDAP still applies, just as the "S" in some of the IETF "Simple" protocols occasionally raises eyebrows.
