Public-Key Infrastructures (PKIs) are becoming a central part of enterprise security architectures. A PKI provides a focal point for many aspects of security management, as well as serving as an enabler for a growing number of standard and custom security applications. Most standard protocols for secure e-mail, Web access, virtual private networks, and single sign-on user authentication systems make use of public-key certificates and therefore require some form of PKI.
