Having looked at news values and the associated ‘mapping’ processes at work in making events into news, it is time to consider the ways in which these events are made meaningful in news-discourse. In order to make anything meaningful, the initiator of a message must not only have an orientation towards the event itself, but also an orientation towards the receiver of the message. For example, how would you describe a simple event in which you were personally involved – say a night out to see a band at your local rock venue? Clearly much depends on who you are talking to.
