Security within the Digital Cinema infrastructure is of paramount importance. The average cost of making and marketing a movie by the MPAA member companies in 2003 was $102.9 million.1 The value of the content is both this sunk development cost plus any profits derived from future revenues. In addition, even though thousands of copies will be made for the cinema release, each individual digital copy carries the entire value with it. Thus, for all practical purposes, security in the context of Digital Cinema is the equivalent of protecting considerably more than $100 million during shipment from the studio, while stored in the theatre, and during playout.
