Another major driver for IG is preparedness for litigation and audit. In U.S. government agencies, discovery is also driven by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and in Europe by Directive 2003/98/EC[] and EC Regulation 1049/2001.[] ARMA International has conducted surveys about the state of records management in various industries.[] The surveys reveal that few organizations have appropriate "hold" mechanisms to ensure preservation of Electronically Stored Information (ESI). However, all relevant and reasonably accessible information must be produced in a timely manner, regardless of its potential to embarrass or damage.
