Services such as Amazon’s AWS and S3 or Canonical’s Ubuntu One offer a way to create and store backups offsite. Larger companies may create their own offsite, online storage options as well. In each of these and similar cases, data is copied and stored remotely on a file server set aside specifically for that purpose. The data backups may be scheduled with great flexibility and according to the plans and desires of the customer. These are generally more expensive options than the average home user may need, but not always as shown by Ubuntu One’s offer of up to 5GB of free storage that is easily kept in sync with your Ubuntu desktop with an option to increase the space for a fee.
