Other Video Apps

I've covered the main video applications in Ubuntu, but there are still others available that you might want to consider. One is gxine, a media player that is very much like Totem in looks and behavior; however, unlike Totem (which lacks DVD menu support), it handles DVD menus and subtitles the way they were meant to be handled. It is available via Synaptic by doing a search for gxine. Once installed, you can run it from Applications ► Sound & Video ► gxine.

Two other very popular alternative video/DVD players are MPlayer and VLC Media Player, both of which have significant followings, particularly for their ability to handle numerous video formats. Both are available via Synaptic by means of searches for mplayer and vlc.
