THE LETTER19 Extreme scaling

IF YOU LOVE TYPE, YOU LOVE TO SEE IT writ large. Extreme scaling (especially when very large elements are used in contrast with normally scaled typographic elements) is a powerful tool in the designer’s arsenal. Almost every typeface assumes a whole new identity when used in gargantuan ways; like the faces on Mount Rushmore, the scale alone is so impressive that we don’t always stop to think about whether it is well-crafted artwork. Its size is enough to seize our attention.
