THE PAGE78 Limiting typefaces

WHEN WE CHOOSE DIFFERENT TYPEFACES to work side by side in the same document, every pairing has the possibility for conflict; do these typefaces, designed by different designers, from different historical classifications, with different characteristics, work together? Is there really a need for each of them, i.e., do they perform essential functions? Is there enough difference between them to justify employing them? These are some of the questions that designers must ask themselves. Too many (unnecessary) choices can result in “type soup.”
