TYPOGRAPHIC EXCAVATION. Even as designers rely increasingly on the computer, paper-based creations have continued to gain popularity. But what happens when a book already carries significant meaning, and the act of transforming it heightens that meaning? Brian Dettmer’s work has been deemed collage, but can also be categorized as décollage because of the manner in which he breaks down books, excavating paper and typography letter by letter, line by line. Having worked in a sign shop both during and after college, Dettmer became very familiar with the tools and typography necessary to create signage and exhibit design.
