Formal Issues

When designers distress letters into overwhelming, disproportional, or illegible forms, it defeats the time and energy type designers have put into their font. Many of the typographic sins that happen on a day-to-day basis are the result of bad habits, misconceptions, and technological laziness. Just because software lets you put an additional stroke around a letter or slope the type to the right doesn’t make it the best choice. By looking at the difference between good and bad type composition, it makes the designer’s efforts all the more valuable. It’s true that certain effects can have an attention-getting purpose, but these examples are less about attracting the viewer and more about poor decisions.
