The Grid

A Cartesian grid system incorporates horizontal lines on the x-axis that intersect vertical lines on the y-axis. When used for layout, these intersecting lines create individual modules that provide a framework for designers to insert words and images. Each module becomes part of a larger system, such as columns and rows, which become a tool—rather than a hindrance—for relating visual elements with one another. When used successfully, they can help the designer achieve compositional unity and variety, as well as functionality.
