Founding the School

Envisioning an ideal school was the task before the founders of Sudbury Valley School. Beginning in 1965, they began to design an educational environment from first principles, to examine what education is and how it best takes place. The members of the group came from a wide variety of backgrounds—academia, public and private schools, the professional world, trades, the arts, and homemaking. Few had known each other before they embarked on the project; they connected through normal avenues of networking.
