7.1. INTRODUCTION

Developments of a small-scale combustor, the so-called “microcombustor”1-3 have been inspired by the rapid development of the micro electromechanical system, called “MEMS.” Fabrications of the MEMS were attained in the early 1990s; however, MEMS has a serious problem, namely, the lack of a suitable scale power source. Conventional chemical batteries cannot follow the downscaling of the electromechanical systems, because the specific energy (W/kg) of those batteries is quite low, and hence, the downscaling of the batteries accompanied by mass reduction leads to a shortage of the power supply.
