CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Satoru Ishizuka

Tubular flame is a flame that is circular in cross section and long in the perpendicular direction. This chapter provides first the background of the research interest in tubular flames. Then, their notable characteristics, which were experimentally found, are briefly introduced. To understand these and other tubular flame characteristics, many fundamental studies have been conducted theoretically, computationally, and experimentally. These fundamental researches are specifically introduced in the next section. In early stages of tubular flame studies, they were limited on premixed combustion. Later, however, they have been extended to non-premixed combustion and to liquid-fueled heterogeneous combustion. ...
