It’s strange what lobsters do when a wave strands them on rocks. Instead of crawling forward just a few feet to reach the water, they remain where they are. Most die waiting for the ocean to come to them instead of trying to get back to it.

Most people wait too. They wait for an organizational initiative to improve a deteriorating culture; wait for HR to do an opinion survey or sound an alarm; wait for a boss to notice the challenge they’re dealing with; wait until distrust impacts the bottom line so someone will finally do something.

Like the lobster, many don’t try to reach a self-sustaining environment. They die waiting—not literally, of course, ...
