Introduction

Despite Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ early desire to have “a computer on every desk and in every home,” the PC has never been and is still not a consumer electronics device. We use them at work because the flexibility and power they offer as productivity tools offsets the expense of maintaining IT support departments, and we use them in the home because they are, at least for the moment, the best way of getting online.
