Cynthia Y. Young is a native of Tampa, Florida. She is currently a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and the author of College Algebra, Trigonometry, Algebra and Trigonometry, and Precalculus. She holds a B.A. degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), an M.S. degree in Mathematical Sciences from UCF, and both an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D in Applied Mathematics from the University of Washington. She has taught high school in North Carolina and Florida, developmental mathematics at Shoreline Community College in Washington, and undergraduate and graduate students at UCF. Dr. Young’s two main research interests are laser propagation through random media and improving student learning in STEM. She has authored or co-authored over 60 books and articles and been involved in over $2.5M in external funding. Her atmospheric propagation research was recognized by the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator award and, in 2007, she was selected as a Fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineers. She is currently the co-director of UCF’s EXCEL program, whose goal is to improve the retention of STEM majors.
