Duane Michals (b. 1932), a self-taught photographer, was one of the transformative figures, along with Jerry Uelsmann, whose work received wide notice after being shown at the Art Institute of Chicago by Hugh Edwards (1968), at MoMA (1970), at George Eastman House by Nathan Lyons (1971), and at LIGHT Gallery by Harold Jones (1974).6
