5.5.1. File System Backup vs. Database Backup

Both File System Backups by the computer system administrator and Database Backups by the Database Administrator are required to ensure recoverability of a database server machine from failure.

A File System Backup copies all files on a computer to tape or other disk from the machine being backed up. This is usually the responsibility of the computer system administrator. A file system backup is necessary in order to account for all files on the computer.

A Database Backup is a specially formatted copy of one database's data and metadata in one or more files sufficient to completely recreate the database. This is usually the responsibility of the Database Administrator (DBA). ...
