How to Differentiate Skill-Oriented Tasks from Knowledge-Oriented Tasks

Tasks may be skill-oriented or knowledge-oriented. Think of a skill as knowing how to perform a task, and knowledge as knowing what is required to perform a task. For example, “drill a hole” and “perform CPR” are skill-oriented tasks; “identify safety precautions” and “describe seven components of the system” are knowledge-oriented tasks. Most tasks associated with on-the-job training are skill-oriented, but teams generally include knowledge-oriented tasks in the listing.
