Abstract:

Building materials can be significant pollutant emission sources and can therefore be of public health importance. Transition elements, which form coloured ions, are utilized in making pigments which are used in various sections of the economy; electric lamps emit mercury, and various other household wares have been shown to consist of heavy metals other than lead. This chapter considers the heavy metals antimony, cadmium, chromium and mercury employed as building materials with respect to their history, structure, properties and uses.
