Absorbed (or absorptive) glass mat A technology used in one design of valve-regulated lead–acid battery. The electrolyte solution is absorbed in a matrix of glass fibres, which immobilizes the electrolyte solution and holds it next to the plates. The material also facilitates the transport of oxygen to the negative plate and acts as a separator. Abbreviated as ‘AGM’. See Gas recombination, Valve-regulated lead–acid battery.
Acid stratification A phenomenon observed in lead–acid cells. During charging, high-density acid is produced in the plates and, under the action of gravity, tends to fall to the lower part of the cell.
