They flew us down to Key West on December 8 and we moved into the air station’s bachelor officer quarters, the tallest building on the island, with its huge lettering on the side of the building, “Fly Navy,” visible from Sloppy Joe’s, Ernest Hemingway’s old drinking hangout on Duval Street.
The following day, right there on the station notice board, they posted the flight schedule that announced my fate: “Ensign Lay will fly a T-2 Buckeye to USS Lexington, cruising 75 miles east of Key West, and make four carrier landings, and four catapult takeoffs.”
