Shinjuku

Resembling an all-purpose city, Shinjuku is replete with a large garden-park, train stations, shopping complexes, and department stores. Railway lines split the area into two sub-cities. The windy avenues in West Shinjuku are dominated by offices, stores, and experimental skyscrapers. East Shinjuku is a legacy of the 1960s, when the area’s Bohemian quarter attracted artists, writers, and political activists. Though cultural features exist on both sides, East Shinjuku appears more hedonistic, with its neon-illuminated nightspots and a sprawling red-light district.
